I have a long term research interest in the taxonomy and phylogenetic relationships of tropical freshwater fish, principally in the families Cichlidae and Cyprinidae. I use both morphological and molecular methods, both for taxonomy and phylogenetic analysis. Currently, I work with manuscripts on selected African cichlids, and numerous South American Cichlidae, danionine Cyprinidae (Danio, Devario) together with Fang Fang, and the South Asian cyprinid genus Puntius. Undergraduate students work on NW South American Aequidens, and selected African cichlids. Graduate student Te Yu Liao is completing a phylogenetic revision of the rasborin Cyprinidae. Long term geographical focus is on Paraguay and Myanmar. I am also involved in all sorts of biodiversity informatics, but that is more infrastructure than research, as head of the Swedish GBIF node, and the Swedish FishBase team.
