  • Research:
Developing and applying methods of variational analysis, ensemble forecasting, radiance retrieval, feature calibration and alignment, and weather control with the goal of improving the usefulness of satellite observations of the earth system, especially for weather forecasting and climate change monitoring.

Ross N. Hoffman is a principal scientist and vice-president of the R & D division at AER. AER is a science-based information services company. AER continuously improves and innovates tools and methodologies to explore, manage, and exploit earth system data. AER provides timely, accurate, and environmentally informed information that supports decision-making and best practices in government and in business. Dr. Hoffman's principal areas of technical expertise are objective analysis and assimilation methods, atmospheric dynamics, climate theory, and atmospheric radiation. He has made significant contributions and written seminal papers in variational analysis, ensemble forecasting, radiance retrieval, feature calibration and alignment, and weather control. Dr. Hoffman has a long standing interest in observing the ocean surface wind from space and is a long-time member of the NASA scatterometer science teams. Dr. Hoffman has served on the National Academy of Science Committees on Earth Science of the Space Studies Board and on the Status and Future Directions in U.S Weather Modification Research and Operations. Dr. Hoffman is currently a panel co-chair of the American Meteorological Society ad hoc Committee on Uncertainty in Forecasting.
