Mammals have two different types of fat cells, white and brown. White fat cells are specialized for energy storage, while brown fat cells function to dissipate energy as heat. Brown fat cells thus have the ability to counteract obesity. My research is aimed at defining the transcriptional networks that control the differentiation and development of these different types of fat cells.
