Bill studied a clonal woody plant, Vaccinium stamineum, or "deerberry." Specifically, he examined how physiological integration altered growth, survivorship, and reproduction of the species under a variety of environmental conditions. This work involved tracking approximately 12,000 stems over a two year period at the birthplace of ecology, the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory (SREL), on the Savannah River Site. This work also involved statistical analysis of empirical data, as well as spatial analysis and computer modeling, to examine this clonal integration. During his graduate career, Bill received multiple awards for research presentations at both highly technical and non-scientific levels.
