  • Research:
I am currently investigating a classic problem in protein science -- identifying determinants of protein folding.

In this work, I am using artificial neural network (ANNs) and supporting software developed by myself and others, protein molecular structural data from the RCSB Protein Data Bank, as well as other data derived in-house from RCSB data and obtained from external sources. Results are expected to find technical application in such areas as protein sequence alignment and homology modeling, with broad applicability including my own areas of interest in microbiology. A modest group of workstations allows 46 instances of my ANNs to run concurrently, but even with these running 24/7 the project will take months to complete. Thus I am currently exploring the feasibility of employing CUDA technology to gain ANN throughtput improvements of one or more orders of magnitude.
