    Irrational use of ANTIBIOTICS

During my hospital training, I reviewed number of cases. The thing which I noticed is extensive use of antibiotics. In some cases, I found couples of antibiotics used even though when one broad spectrum antibiotic was sufficient. Most commonly prescribed antibiotics were Third generation cephalosporins (particularly ceftriaxone and cefotaxime), brand name-Magnex Forte and Amikacin(Aminoglycoside). Also, antibiotics were prescribed for a period longer than required(Ref.-Dipiro book of Advanced Pharmacotherapeutics). On my research, I came to know that emperical treatment with antibiotics was due to lack of culture facilities. Though appropriate guidelines for the rational use available, fear of morbidity and mortality associated with intra and surgical site infection leads to irrational use of antibiotics.
