Functional examination of mammalian long noncoding RNAs

The majority of the mammalian genome is transcribed as noncoding RNAs. Rather than being transcriptional artefact, we predict that many of these transcripts act as regulatory molecules. My research is focused on a subset of these transcripts referred to as long noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs). Although a small number have been shown to have function, it is not clear how many of the ~30,000 long ncRNAs that have been identified in mammals are also functional and whether these transcripts can be classified into functional subgroups. Using a combination of bioinformatic and genome-scale experimental approaches we hope to learn more about this part of the transcriptome.
