Isolated microtia, a congenital anomaly of the external ear is a leading cause of conductive hearing loss in humans. Although, microtia is notoriously prevalent in Latin America (17,4 in 10,000 live births in Quito, Ecuador) and few clustered families have suggested that genetics may play an important role in this disease, the etiology of isolated microtia remains unclear so far.
My current research requires the execution of multiple molecular assays in order to establish a genetic cause for this condition in South American population by genotyping 100 trios comprised of one proband and two unaffected parents (GWAS).
Part of my project involves the analysis of phenotypically concordant and discordant twins in order to determine the role of genes/environment in the presentation of this disease.
Eventually, we hope to identify a disease predisposing-loci, thus achieving a better understanding of the pathogenesis of this craniofacial malformation.
