Knowledge discovery in the life sciences is at the critical point of turnover from techniques for acquiring, accessing and maintaining knowledge within an organizational structure to the integration of that data into comprehensive models. The emergence of the semantic web has revolutionized the way knowledge can be exchanged, thus creating a momentum for scientific discovery. Semantic web technologies offer a paradigm that is closer to natural languages and as such enables the domain expert who generates the data to "incubate" the underlying ontology - e.g. to refine it along criteria of completeness and usefulness. The implication of this is that biological datasets compiled within a semantic framework will become dynamically linked through the use of common controlled vocabularies.
