My research is in history & philosophy of chemistry including the question of the reduction of chemistry to quantum mechanics. More specifically I examine the extent to which the periodic system of the elements has been reduced to quantum mechanics and the educational implications that this may have. I am also interested in the question of constructivism in chemical education and have written critical papers on this topic. I explore the nature of atomic orbitals, and the Madelung Rule. My more philosophical work focuses on the distinction between elements as 'simple substances' and 'basic substances' as they have been termed by Fritz Paneth in his classic paper on the subject.
