  • Research:
I design and conduct, with undergraduate students at Bay Path College, research projects in protein and nucleic acid biochemistry related to deepening the scientific basis for forensic applications.

The identification of human blood in old stains is problematic. We are exploring a method in which the N-terminal peptide of human serum albumin, DHAK, might be detected in tryptic digests of fabric-bound blood. Retention time on HPLC and a very strong affinity for Cu(2+) are exploited in the development process. Comparisons are being made to a synthetic peptide of the same sequence. Also in progress is a project to chemically identify inhibitors of the PCR that occur in many samples of denim. Next semester, we will initiate a program on the bench-scale production of biodiesel fuel from Chlamydomonas.
