The objective of this project is to engineer injectable synthetic hydrogel matrices that present adhesive cues and angiogenic factors to direct the formation of orderly networks of blood vessels. These “bio-artificial matrices” will serve as pre-vascularized beds to support subsequent cell transplant therapies. My hypothesis is that these supportive matrices will significantly enhance the functionality and regenerative success of transplanted cells. I propose to use these matrices in a diabetic rat model system to enhance transplanted pancreatic islet viability and function.
