While only 5% of the body's serotonin is found in the brain - where it has a central role in mood, appetite, and many other functions - most of it is transported by platelets and can be released upon platelet activation. Platelets contribute to hemostasis and inflammatory responses and I think that serotonin might be an important player. A variety of therapies could be developed with existing serotonin receptor and transporter agonists or antagonists once molecular and cellular mechanisms are better understood.
