The epigenetic causes of gene inactivation in colorectal cancer was demonstrated by gain of DNA hypermethylation, subsequent to loss of active histone mark, H3K4 trimethylation at the non-CpG island promoter containing genes. Interestingly, none of these non-CpG promoters gained any well-known repressive histone marks to contribute to the gene silencing of these genes.
