My primary research objective is to develop methods of promoting the ex vivo formation and in vivo regeneration of musculoskeletal tissues including cartilage, fibrocartilage, and bone. I am specifically interested in the dynamic regulatory relationships between extracellular matrix biochemistry, tissue mechanics, and population-level cell behavior during morphogenesis. Currently, I am using inducible gene expression circuits to drive the recruitment and subsequent differentiation of progenitor populations for the regeneration of bone. I am also interested in the use of surface-modified nanoparticles for regulating cell-mediated remodeling and the mechanical properties of the extracellular matrix.
