I use metatranscriptomics to address questions related to eukaryotic phytoplankton in harmful algal blooms and river plumes.

Metatranscriptomics allows us to look exclusively at expressed genes in a large (i.e. 2+ liters) population of microbes at the exact time of mRNA isolation! Virually we are "genetic eavesdropping". Thus, many unexpressed or under expressed genes will not be represented in the library, which is a major advantage when trying to reason with environmental samples, making it easy to detect genomic response to stimuli or stress. I have been specifically developing methods to target marine eukaryotic phytoplankton populations. These methods would determine biogeochemical mechanisms active during bloom formation, maintenance, as well as decline. This information could help us determine what the main impetus is for harmful algal blooms, better model their spread and assist in preventative measures. I am also hoping to examine the genetics behind CO2 drawdown in oceanic river plumes (specifically the the carbon concentrating mechanisms within diatom populations). River plumes are among the greatest in terms of CO2 drawdown in the oceans, and are critical for our understanding of the entry of anthropogenic CO2 into the biosphere.
