I've spent the last few years working on fleshing out the concept of the statistical model. This may sound like it was done in the 1700s, but go check your favorite stats package and see if it has such a concept. It may have some prepackaged models, but no means of combining them into more complex setups, and no means of plugging an agent-based model (for example) into a slot where a traditional OLS model would normally go. This is not just a software feature, but a step in the development of more advanced descriptive tools.
In the biostats world, I've been at NIMH writing models to seek out the genetic causes of mental disorders.
