  • Research:
Ecological risks from genetically modified crops.

Outbreaks of non-target pests in genetically modified Bt cotton have required continued high insecticide use and reduced the expected environmental benefits of Bt cotton. In my research I am investigating the ecological causes of non-target stink bug outbreaks in Georgia, US and Brazil. My results indicate that reduced populations of caterpillar pests, resulting in reduced competition for stink bug populations, may be responsible for outbreaks in Georgia. In Brazil, my results indicate that stink bug outbreaks are unlikely. My research will contribute to predictions of the environmental risks and benefits of Bt cotton and other GM crops in the future.
