Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising laser based technique allowing for rapid, multi-elemental and in situ analysis in different environments.

During the research, we proposed a new spectroscopy technology i.e. Laser Ablation Fast Pulse Discharge Plasma Spectroscopy technique (LA-FPDPS). A fast high-voltage spark discharge circuit was designed and combined with laser ablation to enhance optical emission of laser plasma. The whole system composed three major parts: a nanosecond discharge circuit, a Q-switched pulse Nd:YAG laser, and a spectroscopy detection system. In this technique, the discharge current can reach up to 1.9 KA, and the main electric energy deposition only lasted for ∼40 ns. An intense optical emission was then observed. The line intensity of plasma emission was greatly increased along with an improved signal-to-noise ratio, in comparison with that using a microsecond pulse discharge circuit. A detail experimental study has been done on the discharge character and optical emission of this technique. And a series of six research papers and a patent have been published. Currently further researches are carrying on to investigate the mechanism of the optical emission enhancement, the space and time resolved plasma temperate and electron number density, the local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) conditions in LA-FPDPS plasma, et.,. A research about the combination method of this technique with other spectroscopy technique such as laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy (LIF) or cavity enhanced absorption spectroscopy (CEAS) will be done in the near future.
