    I am a psychiatrist and a public health researcher who applies the tools of health services research to improve gender equity and human flourishing in resource-limited settings.

    Ongoing research projects include antidepressant medication treatment to improve HIV antiretroviral medication adherence and virologic outcomes among homeless and marginally housed persons in San Francisco; community-based screening for postpartum depression in an informal peri-urban settlement near Cape Town; and social support/HIV stigma and their effects on food security, mental health, and HIV antiretroviral medication adherence in rural Uganda. I am currently designing a randomized evaluation of a structural intervention to improve economic well-being, health behavior, and virologic outcomes among HIV+ women in rural Uganda. A secondary aim of the project is to evaluate the effects of the intervention on HIV-related stigma among the participants and among their social network contacts.
